Thornton out indefinitely after his best Chiefs game

Kansas City stayed 4-0 with a 30-27 win in Las Vegas, but Tyquan Thornton left on a cart after a dislocated left ankle on a 55-yard catch. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says doctors put it back in place, he's flying home for more tests and a second opinion, and he's out indefinitely. He'd just put up five catches for 111 yards and two scores.

Chiefs already ringing Tyreek Hill's agent

With Thornton out indefinitely and Rashee Rice also leaving Sunday's win with a hamstring, The Athletic's Mike Silver says Kansas City has contacted Drew Rosenhaus about a reunion. Hill is still recovering from last year's knee dislocation and torn ligaments, and he's believed to be targeting a November return — not a done deal, just reported interest.

Chargers are 0-4, and history isn't kind

Los Angeles fell 30-23 in Seattle after Justin Herbert threw two interceptions and lost a late fumble. The only NFL team to make the playoffs after an 0-4 start is the 1992 Chargers — who then beat Seattle on 4 October and went 11-5. Next up is Denver at home.

London leaves Washington on its third quarterback

Marcus Mariota started for injured Jayden Daniels at Tottenham, then left in the first quarter with a right knee injury after Laiatu Latu landed on him. Dan Quinn says it's feared to be an aggravated MCL and he'll be scanned; seventh-rounder Athan Kaliakmanis finished a 30-13 loss to the Colts.

Tony Romo and CBS split for good

CBS has confirmed it is 'mutually parting ways' with Romo after nine years as its lead NFL analyst. He had been on leave since his arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in July, and he pleaded no contest on 1 September. J.J. Watt stays alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the rest of the 2026 season. Watt has been filling Romo's seat since CBS announced the change at the end of July, so for viewers the main change is that it's now official.

The NFL bans 49ers owner Jed York for six games

The league has suspended York for six regular-season games and fined him $500,000 under its personal conduct policy, after he pleaded no contest to misdemeanour charges following an arrest in August. The three games he's already missed count towards the ban, so he can return on 20 October, after the 49ers play Washington. On the field it's made no difference so far, because San Francisco went 3-0 without him before tonight's game against Denver.

Watson does it again as the Browns go top of the AFC North

Andre Szmyt's career-long 56-yarder with 10 seconds left beat the Steelers 27-24, after Rodgers had tied it with a touchdown and a two-point sneak. That's a third straight game-winning drive from Deshaun Watson. The Browns are 3-1 and top of the division on their own for the first time since November 2014. Whatever you think of Watson, the comeback stat is real.

Jerry Jones pays a second-rounder for Joey Porter Jr.

Dallas sent a 2028 second and a 2027 sixth to Pittsburgh for a corner who hasn't played a snap this season because of a back injury and a contract standoff. With a 1-2 record and a pass defence ranked 31st in opponent QBR, the Cowboys are going all in now. The question is whether he's healthy enough to be worth it, because he's also due a big new contract.

Jayden Reed's season is over

Matt LaFleur has confirmed that Reed needs neck surgery and will miss the rest of 2026. LaFleur says it isn't career-threatening, which is the main thing after he was carted off in Week 2. On the field, it's now Christian Watson and Matthew Golden's offence, and Tucker Kraft should get more of the ball.

NFL admits the Rams were robbed

Sean McVay says the league told him the late pass interference call on Josh Wallace shouldn't have been thrown. That flag wiped out a game-sealing interception and set up Denver's winning touchdown in their 30-26 win. An apology doesn't change the result, though: the Rams are still 1-2, and Broncos fans will be happy to keep the win.

J.J. McCarthy is a Giant, but don't expect him to start soon

New York gave Minnesota a 2027 fifth-round pick for him after Jaxson Dart was lost for the season, and the deal is pending a physical. Jameis Winston is still the starter, and James Palmer reckons McCarthy is Week 7 to 9 at the earliest. For now it's a cheap punt on a former top-10 pick, not a QB change.

Tampa hand it to an undrafted rookie

Baker Mayfield is out for at least three weeks with a dislocated thumb, so Jalon Daniels starts against Green Bay on Sunday. He'll be the first quarterback other than Mayfield to start for the Bucs since Tom Brady, and the first undrafted rookie ever to start at QB in their 51 seasons. Tampa are 0-3, so there's no easing him in.
